After a white supremacist terrorist inspired by Trump murdered 22 and injured 26 in El Paso, TX, Professor Eddie Glaude speaks the truth on American white supremacy.
A pediatrician visited a newly created shelter for children who’ve been taken from their parents. The Washington Post headline – ‘America is better than this’: What a doctor saw in a Texas shelter for migrant children – illustrates what we want to believe, that America is a nation that would never allow such human rights abuses. But we can’t believe that any more, because the Republican party controls the US government and it has explicitly directed law enforcement to take children away from their parents and has publicly defended this policy.
We’re edging ever closer to Nazi Germany and the Republicans have signaled by their actions over the past 18 months that they support fascism as a way to permanently secure power.
The ACLU has a Guide to Fighting Hatred up on their site. It’s worth reading if you want to take part in preserving our democracy and nursing it back to health after we weather the current storm of white nationalism and foreign influence.
Anyone who doesn’t acknowledge the pattern of treating black men as Other and Less Than and white men as having inherent value is being willfully ignorant or openly hateful and has chosen the side of the oppressor. I have no regard and no time for those who side with the oppressor.
Stephon Clark was murdered by police, shot to death in his grandmother’s back yard. He died because the police rules for use of deadly force are utterly broken. The system in place now encourages use of force and unconditionally protects police who use deadly force. That needs to change immediately.
The Sacramento police use of force policy “instructs officers to de-escalate conflicts and continuously reassess if force is needed. It begins with this sentence: “It shall be the policy of the Sacramento Police Department that officers value and preserve the sanctity of human life at all times.”” They were supposed to have less-lethal weapons available. They blatantly disregarded this policy.
Clark was a father of two. His son’s lost their father because police decided he “might” have a gun. Those police need to be charged and convicted of murder and they need to go to prison like any other citizen guilty of murder. Only then will we start on the path to justice and proper police conduct in this nation.
As a former Life Member of the NRA and a former Army Infantryman and Deputy Sheriff, I’ve spent years with firearms, carrying them and using them, and I know firsthand what they’re capable of. When I joined the NRA as a young man, I quickly realized that the NRA was becoming radicalized, turning away from a group dedicated to education and sports and becoming an extremist group dedicated to preserving itself and its twisted vision of ideal America. I remember getting my first voting guide for the NRA board and realizing that everyone I could vote for was an extremist. In the many years since that time, the NRA has become more openly hateful and used ever more extreme propaganda to convince whites their identity, safety, and way of life is under attack. The NRA’s rhetoric has focused on encouraging whites to buy more firearms before they’re banned and to carry those firearms everywhere, and to vote only for politicians who commit to making firearms easily available to everyone and to protecting their identity and way of life.
After the latest school shooting made possible by the NRA and its supporters and politicians, Dallas Sportscaster Dale Hansen speaks of the truth behind the right’s inaction on gun reform and aggression against those who push for reform, even attacking the victims of gun violence.
If we’re to make further progress as a nation, the United States must destroy the NRA and other extremist groups. We’re facing an existential threat from far right groups aligned with Russia and white nationalism and the NRA has publicly aligned itself with these groups. As citizens, this fight is ours. We know we cannot count on the current GOP to help us defeat these threats. We must stand up and take them on wherever we find them.
