“Never Again isn’t just about remembering how the Holocaust ended. It’s also about how it started, with a gradual process of legal exclusion and state-sponsored dehumanization that led eventually to the deaths of my grandpa’s family and so many millions of others,” Rugenberg, whose relatives were murdered in the Holocaust, said at the protests in Providence last week.
Stephanie Hofeller with her father, Thomas, the man behind the GOP’s citizenship question.
The New Yorker’s Charles Bethea brilliantly tells the story of a woman who discovered evidence that her father was deeply involved in suppressing non-white votes and was behind the citizenship census question. Her multifaceted story lays bare the evil of the modern GOP.
Law enforcement is difficult work, even for those free of hatred and committed to treating people equally under the law. People afflicted with racism and other hatred cannot serve effectively in law enforcement and should be excluded from the field.
If you’re interested in critical thinking and the remarkable ability of many people to delude themselves and others, it’s worth reading this short reference on crank magnetism, which may remind you of several people you know. We certainly have some people among our relatives and my kids’ friends who are walking demonstrations of crank magnetism.
RationalWiki is a good resource for critical thinking and research on ideas and people you encounter. I’ve found it well written and have not found any obvious false or misleading statements in my occasional visits to the site.
If you’re interested in the Incel movement, it’s worth reading this surprisingly thorough coverage of a surprising (to me) aspect of the Incel movement. The author also covers the virulent misogyny inherent in this movement and helps the reader gain insight into the origins of this hatred.
A Christian minister named Dave Barnhart wrote the powerful statement below, exposing the bad faith of the US right wing pseudo-Christians.
“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn…You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe.
Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.
I’m still surprised at people’s ability to delude themselves to justify their hatred. This phenomenon appears far more common on the right, but #NeverBernie partisans like this show the left is also capable of deluding themselves to justify their worldview.
Redditor jwords wrote a very insightful comment on this post about a recent Trump atrocity. In it, he provides a concise and reasonable explanation for why Trump won and what motivates his supporters.
You can go to Reddit to see the comment/question jwords is responding to, but I’ll paste it in here to make this an easier read.
KidKilobyte: “Just saw this on his twitter feed and got a pit in my stomach. How can his base tolerate such bad timing and bad taste in what he posts? Other than fringe lunatics, what do educated Trump supporters say about his constant stream of garbage. Why does goosing the economy trump (pun intended) good taste and excuse such an unrelenting stream of garbage from his mouth? And as to the “great” economy, seems the deficit is ballooning and this train is headed for a bridge that is out.”
