Trump Has Committed Treason

Daniel W. Drezner, Professor of international politics at Tufts University, writes “We should have a debate over whether treason is being committed by the White House. Yes, I just typed those words.”

The GOP is now the Treason Party. Republicans loyal to America will clearly demonstrate that in their actions. The rest will continue “adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

When Americans Say ‘Democracy,’ We Often Mean Something Else

As Max Fisher and Amanda Taub write in The Interpreter, “When we wrote about Israelis curbing their own democracy in order to maintain majority Jewish rule and a firmly Jewish national identity, some pointed out, we were really talking about threats to liberalism.”

This is an excellent point, one that all citizens need to understand. This short piece is worth your time to help you understand the difference between democracy and liberalism, and that one does not imply the other.

White Civil Service Commission Votes to Rehire Virulently Racist White Cop

Police Lt. Charles DeShazer made this statement while at a crime scene: “We got the Alabama porch monkeys all contained.”  DeShazer’s statement was captured on police body cam and reported by two APD supervisors who were also at the scene and heard the comment. An internal affairs investigation was launched. After the investigation, Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz fired Lt. DeShazer.

DeShazer appealed his firing to the Aurora Civil Service Commission. On June 29 the commission reinstated DeShazer. The commission was aware DeShazer had previously been “written up at least three times before, including once for making sexually offensive comments.” It’s worth reading the Heavy profile on DeShazer to help you understand just how well known it was that DeShazer is a virulent racist. It’s also worth looking at the race of the members of the committee who chose to reinstate DeShazer and especially the one committee member who recused herself from the vote.

Chief Metz was rightly upset by the committee’s ruling and, to his credit, he’s determined to keep DeShazer off the streets. He made the following statement: “The Department is in the process of returning Sgt. DeShazer back to work. He will first be assigned to the APD Academy to ensure he is in compliance with all POST certification requirements. His final assignment has yet to be determined. It is within my authority to set his assignment. I can assure the community that Sgt. DeShazer will not be in a supervisory or citizen-facing role”

This is a perfect example of the practical effect of white supremacy and how it can overrule even a police chief’s judgment on who he wants on his force. I admire the chief’s determination to limit the damage this cop can do to the public.

Russia Is at War with the West. When Are We Going to War with Russia?

Russia is at war with the West. When are we going to war with Russia? The West is far stronger than Putin’s forces, but only if we recognize the threat and go after them together.

This NPR story paints a clear picture of Russia’s long term investment in hostile propaganda operations against the United States.

Anne Frank Today

Human beings are being dehumanized right now, and once their humanity has been denied, they’re being treated as invaders, parasites, threats.

Immigrants are the most vulnerable targets of this administration, but they’re only the first target. Anti-Trump resisters and those who help immigrants will likely be next.

Legality vs Morality

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”

― Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail

In a fully developed human being, morality will be fully independent from legality. Morality is present in very young children and is considered innate in the human species. Legality is a result of civilization and reflects the will of those in power.

The morality of a society is revealed by its laws. Its legal structure reveals its values, particularly who is considered human and worthy of citizenship and the privilege that affords.

Separating Children from Their Parents Shows Republicans Support Fascism as a Way to Secure Power

A pediatrician visited a newly created shelter for children who’ve been taken from their parents. The Washington Post headline – ‘America is better than this’: What a doctor saw in a Texas shelter for migrant children – illustrates what we want to believe, that America is a nation that would never allow such human rights abuses. But we can’t believe that any more, because the Republican party controls the US government and it has explicitly directed law enforcement to take children away from their parents and has publicly defended this policy.

We’re edging ever closer to Nazi Germany and the Republicans have signaled by their actions over the past 18 months that they support fascism as a way to permanently secure power.
